AIDS/HIV

HIV/AIDS is a very serious disease, mostly because once HIV destroys your immune system. You can easily get other diseases that your body cannot fight. There is no cure for HIV or AIDS but if diagnosed early on, there are medicines that can help you stay healthy. Everyone is at risk for HIV/AIDS, regardless of age, sex, income level or sexual orientation.

You cannot tell if someone is HIV-positive simply by looking at a person. But if someone has HIV/AIDS and doesn't know it, he or she can still pass the virus on to others. You can protect yourself by:
• Not having anal, oral or vaginal sex
• Using a new latex condom or dental dam each time you have sex
• Not sharing needles, toothbrushes, or razor blades
• Knowing the HIV status of your partner
• Getting regular screening tests

HIV testing: As of September 1, 2010, anyone, age 13-64, who gets medical treatment in New York State will be asked if he or she wants to be tested for HIV. Thirty percent of people who test positive each year don't know their HIV status. The goal is to make it easy for you to know your HIV status. Knowing your status lets you take steps to stay healthy and protect others. The next time you see a health care provider, and want to know your HIV status, ask for the test. If your HIV test is positive, you will be able to get treatment.
